Before They Become Memories

July 2, 2026

There are people we’ve known all our lives however, there are still things about them we may never have thought to ask.

Our grandpa is Grandpa. Our mum is Mum. Our dad is Dad.

These names feel so familiar. They’re tied to the people who raised us, looked after us, gave us advice and were there when we needed them.

But before they became our grandparents or our parents, they had lives of their own.

They were children once, with their own dreams, friendships and worries. They had experiences we never saw, made choices we may not fully understand, and went through things that helped shape the people we know today.

When we’re young, we don’t always think about that. We know our parents as the ones who take care of us, and our grandparents as the ones who tell us stories, spoil us a little or bring the family together.

It’s only later that we sometimes start wondering about the people they were before we came along.

What was their childhood really like? What did they dream of doing? Who were their closest friends? What were the moments that changed things for them?

A family tree can tell us where we come from. It gives us names, dates and connections between generations.

But it won’t tell us about the little things that made up someone’s life: the place they loved growing up, the friendship they never forgot, the difficult decision they had to make or the family tradition they wanted to keep alive.

Those are the things we often learn only if we take the time to ask.

And sometimes, a simple question can lead to a story we’ve never heard before.

You might hear a story you’ve heard a hundred times before. Or you might discover something completely new about someone you thought you knew so well.

Either way, these conversations give us a chance to understand each other a little better, while we still have the opportunity to ask, listen and share.

We may begin to understand why someone made a certain choice, where their strength came from, or why certain things have always mattered so much to them.

And we may realise that, long before they became such an important part of our lives, they were already living a life full of their own hopes, experiences and memories.

This is the idea behind the upcoming Life Stories collection at WonderLys ♥.

We want to make it easier for families to have these conversations, to ask the questions they may never have thought to ask and to keep the answers to return to in the years ahead.

Because there are still stories to hear, things to discover and questions worth asking.

And while our loved ones are still here to tell their stories, we have the chance to listen. ♥
