The Stories We Almost Lose - Family, Memory and Time

June 2, 2026

Some family stories are told at every gathering. Others come up once, almost by accident and are never mentioned again.

A detail about a childhood home. The reason a family moved to another country. The story behind a tradition everyone still follows, even though few people remember how it began.

These details may seem ordinary at the time. Thus, when nobody remembers them clearly enough to tell them again, a little piece of a family's story can disappear.

Family history isn't made up of major events alone. It lives in everyday life, in the places people once called home, the customs they carried from one generation to the next and the ways they found to get through difficult times.

Sometimes, it is found in the smallest details: a recipe prepared the same way for decades, a phrase everyone in the family knows, or a particular celebration that has brought people together year after year.

We may continue these traditions without knowing where they came from. We may hear a familiar story without realising that it holds a piece of history that nobody has written down.

And as families grow and change, these details can become harder to pass on. People move away, generations grow older and the context behind certain memories slowly fades. What was once common knowledge can become a story no one quite remembers how to tell.

Preserving family stories isn't about recording every detail or creating a perfect account of the past. It's about recognising that the ordinary things we inherit can mean more than we realise.

The experiences of previous generations can help us understand where certain values came from, why particular traditions matter and what people before us had to overcome to build the lives we know today.

They can also offer something to future generations: a sense of belonging, a connection to those who came before them such as a better understanding of the story they are part of.

Of course, every family has its own boundaries. Some stories are shared openly, while others are deeply personal and are better left private. Not everything needs to be written down and no one should feel obliged to share more than they wish.

What matters is giving the stories people do want to pass on a place to live beyond a conversation, a gathering or a single generation.

At WonderLys, we want to create books that give families a way to preserve the experiences, memories and traditions they choose to share, so that these stories can be revisited and maybe one day help someone understand where they come from.
